Description

Underrated 1857-D AU 58 Gold Dollar

1857-D AU 58 NGC. An elusive D-mint dollar that most often comes poorly struck, although not notoriously so for a Dahlonega issue. Just 3,533 pieces were struck and specialists consider the '57-D to be among the more underappreciated dates in the gold dollar series from this popular Southern mint. This near-mint example is reasonably well detailed and retains ample luster that is most vibrant on the reverse. The surfaces are tinged in orange-gold patina and show a tiny pinched area on the obverse edge, as struck, at 9 o'clock. On the reverse, there are several raised die cracks near the top of the wreath and a short hairline scratch to the left. Population: 12, in 58, 3 finer (11/98).

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25CF, PCGS# 7546, Greysheet# 8077)

Weight: 1.67 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
