Description

1857 Gold Dollar
Unsung Scarcity in Gem Condition

1857 G$1 MS65 NGC. The 1857 is a high-mintage issue perceived to be relatively easy to locate, yet our auction records suggest it is anything but that in Gem or finer grades. The Garrett and Guth reference suggests, "Gem examples of this date are much rarer than later dates of the gold dollar series." Frosty and lustrous, the present coin is coruscated with attractive greenish-gold patina. A glass reveals no serious marks, although the left wreath top is a bit incomplete. The eye appeal is exceptional. Census: 11 in 65, 8 finer (8/16).
