Description

1857-S Gold Dollar
Sharply Struck MS61

1857-S G$1 MS61 NGC. The mintage of this early S-mint gold dollar was an even 10,000 pieces, with graded survivors today averaging about XF45 to AU50. Bowers writes in his series Guide Book that the 1857-S in "true Mint State is a formidable rarity." This is an attractive Mint State example showing reddish-orange color with a good strike through the centers and indeed throughout the reverse. The large S mintmark is especially bold. The obverse shows minor weakness on some peripheral letters and some die crumbling at C in AMERICA. Census: 11 in 61, 6 finer (9/20).(Registry values: N4719)
