Description

1857-S Gold Dollar, MS61
Rare in Uncirculated Grades

1857-S G$1 MS61 NGC. The 2011 Bowers' Guide Book of Gold Dollars echoes David Akers comment that "I would be surprised if more than 15 to 20 Uncirculated examples are known." Even in About Uncirculated conditions, the 1857-S is rare. This lustrous and semireflective yellow-gold coin is ranked solidly within the cherished Mint State category, housed in an MS61 holder. Marks are limited to a few delicate hairlines on each side, while the devices are sharply struck and the high points are free of wear. The bow loops are fully formed, and the bowknot shows above-average definition. Census: 10 in 61, 6 finer (7/24).(Registry values: N4719)
