Important 1858 Gem Cameo Proof Gold Dollar
1858 G$1 PR66 Cameo NGC. The 1858 is a very rare gold dollar in proof format. While 1858 marked the beginning of the modern era of proof coinage and lower denomination coins were struck in fairly large numbers, there were relatively few gold dollars produced. One researcher suggests that a list of survivors would only number 10-12 pieces, including the ANS and Smithsonian coins from a possible original mintage of only 20 coins. The surfaces of this piece display even, rich golden coloration with a thin coating of milky patina acquired from years of storage. The devices show a significant amount of mint frost against the moderately reflective mirrors in the fields. The only identifier mentionable for future pedigree purposes is a single microscopic circular planchet flake above the O of DOLLAR. This appears to be an exact match for the Trompeter coin. A rare opportunity to acquire this important Type Three gold dollar as a proof example.
