Description

1858-S Gold Dollar, MS63
Bass Provenance

1858-S G$1 MS63 PCGS. The original mintage of the 1858-S is a paltry 10,000 pieces. Along with the 1857-S (10,000 pieces produced) and 1859-S (15,000 coins delivered), the '58-S is one of the most underrated condition rarities in the entire Gold Dollar series of 1849-1889. The PCGS Population is 3 in 63 with 3 finer (6/25). This impressively pedigreed representative displays lovely golden-rose and reddish-gold colors over devices that have been sharply brought up in all areas. Both sides are satiny in finish with hints of modest brightness in the fields evident at direct angles. A few stray abrasions seem to account for the grade, but we stress that none are really outwardly distracting.

Breen (1988) reports that the San Francisco Mint had three obverse and 10 reverse dies available for this delivery. With such a paltry mintage, however, it is highly unlikely that all were used. In fact, the author accounts for only two "minor positional varieties," a statement which we assume refers to either the S mintmark or the digits in the date.
