Description

Very Scarce 1859-C Dollar, AU58

1859-C G$1 AU58 PCGS. Variety 11-M, the only known dies. The 1859-C is scarce in all grades, and very rare in Mint State. Moreover, it rivals, according to Douglas Winter (1998), the 1855-C as the worst struck gold dollar from the Charlotte Mint. This AU58 piece displays some of the typical softness found in the hair and the 8 in the date, but the remaining design elements stand out well. Yellow-gold surfaces display a good amount of luster. A scattering of minute marks is noted on the obverse. Population: 10 in 58, 10 finer (10/07).
