Description

1859-C MS 61 PCGS. An absolutely amazing example with an uncharacteristically sharp strike including good definition on the denticles. The surfaces are very lustrous with a semi-prooflike obverse and a frosty reverse; both sides exhibit much less roughness than usually seen on Type Three gold dollars from this Mint. This is the finest known 1859-C gold dollar.
While PCGS has graded an MS 62 1859-C gold dollar, we feel that the North Georgia coin is easily the finest known. A few average quality uncirculated pieces have been encapsulated but none of these are remotely comparable to the present specimen. It was last offered for sale as lot 792 in Stack's October, 1994 James Stack Collection, where it realized $14,300. In addition, it is the plate coin in the new edition of Doug Winter's book Charlotte Mint Gold Coins, 1838-1861.
