Description

1859-D Gold Dollar, MS61
Nice for Type

1859-D G$1 MS61 NGC. Variety 11-O. Surprisingly, two die pairs were required to produce just under 5,000 pieces -- a small mintage, but enough to make the 1859-D the second-most available Dahlonega gold dollar behind the 1849-D. This lustrous example was struck from the less frequently encountered die pair, with the date further right and the 5 centered beneath the second L in DOLLAR. As always, the strike is soft at the centers where the 5 and several letters are incompletely brought up. Likewise, Liberty's headdress is weak in spots and the hair strands are blended. Even so, opportunity to acquire a Mint State Dahlonega dollar does not happen every day. The current coin is attractive and perfectly suited for either a type or series set.(Registry values: N4719)
