Description

1859-D Gold Dollar, MS62
Rarely Seen Finer

1859-D G$1 MS62 NGC. Winter 11-N. The Dahlonega Mint produced 4,952 gold dollars in 1859 that were struck from two die pairs. A single obverse die was paired with two reverse dies. Both reverse dies have the 5 in the date less distinct than the other digits. About 75% of observed 1859-D gold dollars are from the 11-N die pair. Examples from either die pair are rarely encountered in Mint State grades with an average certified grade of AU55. This lustrous honey-gold example has sharp design elements despite the aforementioned weakness of the 5 in the date. The Indian's cheek is nicely rounded with no evidence of friction on the design high points. Census: 7 in 62, 9 finer (3/25).(Registry values: N4719)
