1859-D Gold Dollar, Better Struck MS62
Only Three Finer at PCGS

1859-D G$1 MS62 PCGS. Variety 11-N. CAC. One of two known varieties, with the 9 in the date under the left side of the A in DOLLAR. The 1859-D is among the most frequently encountered D-mint Type Three gold dollars, along with the 1858-D. The average certified survivor, however, only grades About Uncirculated; Mint State pieces are rare. Bowers writes that in the early years of the Civil War many Southerners hid gold coins, thus accounting for the survival of many of the high-grade Dahlonega, Charlotte, and New Orleans gold coins dated from the late-1850s.

The apricot-gold surfaces of this MS62 example exhibit somewhat better strike detail than usually seen. This is especially apparent on the headdress and in the date where the 18 and 9 are relatively strong; only the 5 is weak, one of very few pieces that are weak only on this numeral. Population: 14 in 62, 3 finer (4/13).(Registry values: N4719)
