Choice, Vibrant 1859-D Gold Dollar, PCGS MS 62

1859-D MS 62 PCGS. Very sharply struck with strong central details, a full date, and completely defined borders. There is considerable frosty luster with attractive, deep orange-gold color. A few light scuffs can be seen in the obverse fields and there is a tiny Mint-made planchet defect just to the left of the headband; the reverse is very choice and vibrant.
The 1859-D is the most common Type Three gold dollar from this Mint. There are as many as 15 pieces known to exist in Mint State with the majority of these grading MS 60 to MS 61.The finest known is an NGC MS 64 that was recently sold by Heritage Rare Coin Galleries and was earlier sold as lot 1011 in the Bowers and Merena May, 1998 Montgomery Collection sale where it realized $33,000. Other choice examples include a PCGS MS 63 in the Farmer Collection; the Superior 1/89, lot 269 coin, earlier sold as lot 38 in Stack's 12/78 Bareford Collection sale; and a PCGS graded MS 62 coin in the Duke's Creek Collection. The presently offered specimen is certainly in the Condition Census and is at least the fourth finest known 1859-D gold dollar.
