Description

1859-S Gold Dollar, Frosty MS61+
'One of the Rarest Gold Dollars in Mint State'

1859-S G$1 MS61+ NGC. Four mints struck gold dollars in 1859. Philadelphia manufactured the most coins by far, followed by San Francisco (15,000 coins). Southern branch mint output was characteristically low. The 1859-S is scarce in circulated condition and downright rare in Uncirculated grades, where only 10 to 20 pieces are believed extant. Bowers calls this "one of the rarest gold dollars in Mint State... ." Liberty's curls and headdress are well-detailed, and the wreath elements are uniformly bold. Frosty luster emanates from minimally marked yellow-gold surfaces. Struck from slightly rotated dies. Census: 10 in 61 (1 in 61+), 1 finer (3/16).(Registry values: N4719)
