Description

1860-D Gold Dollar, AU58
Penultimate Issue, Small Mintage

1860-D G$1 AU58 NGC. Variety 12-P. The 1860-D gold dollar boasts a tiny mintage of 1,566 pieces, and Doug Winter estimates the surviving population at 90-100 examples in all grades. This date is certainly rare in AU, especially at the near-Mint level.
Unfortunately, the 1860-D is always seen with a weak strike, and this example shows the typical softness in areas like the U in UNITED and the date on the reverse. The D mintmark is strong, but the ribbon bow is softly rendered. Overall, the strike is about average for this issue. On the other hand, the attractive orange-gold surfaces are lustrous and show only minor contact marks. Census: 20 in 58, 12 finer (4/11).(Registry values: N4719)
