Description
1860-D Gold Dollar, AU58
Landmark Dahlonega Issue
Only 1,566 Coins Struck

 1860-D G$1 AU58 PCGS. Winter 12-P. The small 1,566-piece
mintage makes the 1860-D gold dollar scarce in any grade,
especially in grades lower than XF and in high About Uncirculated
or finer grades. Many pieces are ex-jewelry or have other
impairments and virtually all 1860-D gold dollars are poorly struck
in areas. The U in UNITED is weak as always and the 6 in in the
date is closed and partially filled on this coin. As usual, the bow
knot lacks definition and the left obverse and reverse rims are
incomplete, with the associated dentils indistinct. In other ways,
this example is far sharper than expected. DOLLAR is crisply struck
and the plumes and face curls are bold for the grade. Given the
1860-D's rarity in Mint State, this near-Mint example is offers an
exceptional opportunity for the branch mint gold collector. A few
light marks and wispy abrasions do not distract the eye. This
softly lustrous green-gold coin's overall quality far exceeds most
of its counterparts, approaching parity with the few pieces that
are numerically finer. PCGS Population: 12 in 58 (1 in 58+), 12
finer (10/25).(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25CS, PCGS# 7556, Greysheet# 8084)
