Description

1860-D Gold Dollar, AU58
Excellent Pre-Civil War Survivor

1860-D G$1 AU58 PCGS. Winter 12-P. Yellow-gold surfaces lighten in regions of the reverse of this wonderful near-Mint gold dollar. Abrasions are light, and the only notable one is an old, thin scratch above the date on the reverse. Softness is exhibited on the left side of the obverse, as is typical of this issue.

The 1860-D gold dollar has the third lowest mintage of the Dahlonega issues of this denomination at 1,566 coins, after the 1861-D at 1,250 coins (though this number is unconfirmed and may be higher) and the 1856-D at 1,460 coins. However, since these coins were struck on the eve of the Civil War, many were hoarded due to the economic uncertainty during the conflict, making the survival rate higher than expected at over 6%, or 100 coins. Nevertheless, many of these coins were poorly made, with uneven strikes, including the obliteration of the U in UNITED on the obverse. However, the present example, in addition to its lovely patina, is spared from the worst of the planchet roughness that is also endemic of this issue.(Registry values: N4719)
