Memorable 1860-D Gold Dollar in Choice About Uncirculated
1860-D G$1 AU 58 NGC. The 1860-D is a challenging gold dollar for numerous reasons. First, the Dahlonega Mint produced only 1,566 gold dollars this year, the majority of which have failed to survive. Second, the 80-90 examples that are extant are apt to grade no higher than XF 45, a reality that makes the '60-D a conditionally rare issue. Finally, the typical 1860-D gold dollar is a poorly struck, heavily abraded coin that offers limited eye appeal for the collector and considerable difficulty for the professional grader. The aforementioned criteria will, of course, guide our analysis of the present near-Mint example. One of only 20-23 '60-D gold dollars believed extant in AU, this coin displays lightly abraded surfaces whose lack of individually mentionable distractions is noteworthy for the issue. Die damage or clogging has left the U in UNITED diagnostically weak, and the left obverse and reverse rims are incomplete. The remaining features are suitably defined, nonetheless, and both sides show traces of a prooflike finish. Predominantly yellow-gold in color with traces of honey-tan overtones. In sum, this is a pleasing coin for the grade.
