Description

1860 Gold Dollar, Glittering Gem
One Finer Example at NGC

1860 G$1 MS65 NGC. The number of gold dollars coined in previous years vastly outpaced demand, resulting in a large accumulation in the vaults of the New York Treasury office. According to the 1860 Annual Mint Director's Report, "the system of banking adopted in most states tends to exclude small gold coins from circulation." Only 36,668 gold dollars were struck in 1860. Examples are collectible through MS64, but comparable Gems are much rarer. This strongly detailed example enjoys glittering luster over peach-gold surfaces. Minor marks occur in the fields. Census: 6 in 65, 1 finer (10/19).(Registry values: N2998)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25CR, PCGS# 7555, Greysheet# 8022)
