Description
1861-D Gold Dollar, AU Details
Rare in Any Grade
Struck by the Confederacy
1861-D G$1 -- Cleaned -- NGC Details. AU. Winter 12-Q. Known
as the rarest and most popular gold dollar from the Dahlonega Mint,
the 1861-D is in never-ending popularity regardless of its grade
and condition. An unknown mintage was struck by the Confederate
States of America, although Doug Winter suggests 500 to 1,000+ is a
logical mintage figure. From those few coins perhaps 70 to just
over 80 pieces survive in all grades combined. This example was
cleaned and subtle hairlines exist on both the obverse and the
reverse. A short Mint-made line of struck-in grease angles in front
of Liberty's profile. Olive-gold color graces the lightly
circulated surfaces of this important Civil War gold issue. From The Brittany Legacy Collection, Part III.
