1861-D Gold Dollar, MS63
Key to the Gold Dollar Series

1861-D G$1 MS63 PCGS. CAC. Variety 12-Q. The 1861-D has long been considered the "King of the Gold Dollars." Its reputation is derived not only from the small and unrecorded mintage, but also from the fact that the entire issue was struck under the auspices of the Confederacy. As such, it has both historic and numismatic significance. All of the coins of this issue were struck from a single pair of dies, in May, 1861, a month after the Dahlonega mint was seized by the Confederacy. The exact mintage is unknown, but is often estimated to be between 1,000 and 1,500 pieces. Aside from its historical significance, the 1861-D is also the most elusive D-mint gold dollar in terms of overall availability.

The obverse of the currently offered coin was struck from the already defective 1860 die, and, like that previous issue, the U in UNITED is diagnostically weak, as are the rims. In this case, the U is nonexistent, while the letters NI and ICA, in AMERICA, are indistinct, as is the O in DOLLAR on the reverse. A pair of roller marks (as struck) extend diagonally through the center of the reverse, and a rough-textured planchet streak (as struck), that covers the left side of the R, in DOLLAR, could be used in the future as a pedigree marker. The irregular strike and planchet roughness can undoubtedly be attributed to production by "amateur minters," as Winter terms the remaining mint personnel. Lightly abraded for the grade, this is an important coin from both numismatic and historical perspectives. Population: 6 in 63, 2 finer (4/13).(Registry values: N10218)
