Description

Wonderful 1862 Gold Dollar, MS67
A Superb Civil War-Era Coin

1862 G$1 MS67 PCGS. The U.S. Mint tried vainly to keep coins in circulation in 1862, as the hostilities between North and South made the outcome of the "great conflict" increasingly in doubt. Silver and gold coins disappeared first, and by July 15 even Indian Head cents had vanished from circulation. The Mint pumped out more than 1.3 million gold dollars, but most of them were hoarded, to reappear only decades later, if at all. The present coin is one of the finest dozen or so certified at NGC and PCGS combined, save for a single MS68 NGC coin. The lustrous obverse is remarkably free of even the smallest abrasions, although some apparent die-filling shows on the C of AMERICA. The reverse is equally pristine and boldly struck; the date is remarkably sharp despite its tiny size (1862-dated coins have some of the smallest dates in the U.S. series). A wonderful memento of the Civil War. Population: 4 in 67, 0 finer (9/09).(Registry values: N1)
