Description

1862 Gold Dollar, MS67
Tied for Finest at PCGS

1862 G$1 MS67 PCGS Secure. CAC. Ex: Duckor/Akers. Light rose and turquoise overtones are especially evident on the reverse of this lustrous Superb Gem. Both sides exhibit frosty mint luster and solid design motifs from a strong strike. A glass is required to locate the few minuscule marks on each side.

Variety and Die State: Breen-6071. Normal Dies. Faint clash marks appear inside the wreath. Slight doubling is evident on a few letters on the obverse, but this is not the Doubled Die Obverse variety listed in various references.

Population (6/15): Seven submissions in MS67 are tied for the finest at PCGS. NGC reports nine in MS67 and one MS68.

Commentary: Only four gold dollar issues -- 1851, 1852, 1853, and 1862 -- saw mintages exceeding 1 million coins. Some might add 1854 to the list, combining the Type One and Type Two. Those issues represent type coins that interest collectors seeking a single representative of the denomination or of the design.

Douglas Winter Commentary: More gold dollars were coined in 1862 than in the remaining 28 years of the denomination. Gems are common, and there are possibly as many as 10 or so accurately graded MS67 pieces. NGC has graded one coin MS68 -- which I have never seen -- but I'm going to assume it is similar in quality to the Duckor coin and others. The current PCGS population is seven in MS67 with none finer, while CAC has approved eight in this grade and none finer.

This Superb Gem shows lovely color and nearly perfect surfaces, another remarkable coin with the Akers pedigree. I believe that the Akers-Duckor pedigree will forever be recognized as something special by collectors of gold dollars. These coins are remarkable for their quality, originality, and eye appeal.

Provenance: Purchased from David Akers.
