1863 G$1 MS62 PCGS....
Description
1863 Gold Dollar, MS62
Only 6,200 Pieces Struck for Circulation
1863 G$1 MS62 PCGS. Ex: Harry W. Bass Jr. Collection. In
some ways, it was the Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection that alerted
collectors to the rarity of the 1863 gold dollar in Mint State. A
lengthy write-up in Bass Part IV of the Bowers and Merena sale
suggested only 10 to 14 Mint State examples survived for the 1863
issue. More recent estimates fall in the 50 to 80-piece range,
primarily in lower Mint State grades. Only 6,200 business-strike
gold dollars were struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1863, and few
were saved for numismatic purposes. Accordingly, the 1863 remains
one of the most elusive P-mint gold dollars in Mint State. This
orange-gold example from the Bass Collection as a few light marks
on the well-struck surfaces. As usual for the issue, some Mint-made
striations are visible especially on the reverse. This coin remains
in its Gen. 4.0 PCGS holder (in use 1998-2002) with the barcode on
the back. PCGS Population: 8 in 62 (1 in 62+), 21 finer
