Description

1863 Gold Dollar, MS66
Condition Census Rarity

1863 G$1 MS66 PCGS. Ex: Simpson. In his Analysis of Auction Records (1975), David Akers wrote that the 1863 was the rarest Philadelphia gold dollar of the 1860s and the rarest in Mint State dated later than 1861. He added, "As a date, it is only marginally less rare than the 1875 but, as I just mentioned, it is actually more difficult to obtain in full mint state than the highly regarded 1875."

That statement remains true today. The 1863 has appeared in our auctions only about half as frequently as the 1875, regardless of grade. The Simpson Premium Gem is a Condition Census example. NGC lists an MS67 coin finer, and PCGS lists only the MS68 Duckor coin finer. This piece displays semiprooflike fields and bright butter-gold color, with sharp motifs and exceptional preservation. An outstanding example. Population: 2 in 66, 1 finer (11/21).(Registry values: N1)
