Finest Known 1864 Gold Dollar, a Phenomenal PCGS MS 69

1864 G$1 MS 69 PCGS. While the unprecedented condition of this coin will overpower most viewer's perception of the value of this piece, we would like to digress for just a moment to address the 1864 as an issue by quoting the minting characteristics listed in Paul Taglione's book on the quarter eagle series: "Die clashing, striations, moderately weak strikes and a peculiar drab color characterize virtually all known business strike examples." Faint evidence of die clashing can actually be seen in the fields, and die striations are also present on this piece. However, the die striations have imparted a bright semi-prooflike finish to each side which adds greatly to the coin's eye appeal, especially since the surfaces are abrasion-free which allows the semi-reflective nature of the surfaces to fully shimmer, unimpaired by post-striking defects. This coin is atypical, according to the Taglione characteristics, with the complete striking definition that is seen over both sides. Also atypical is the frosted mint luster that covers the surfaces, mixing with the reflective tendencies of the fields to present the best of each type of finish. Each side is also enveloped in rich reddish tinted patina that shows an occasional streak of lilac, this coloration adding immensely to the coin's eye appeal and obvious originality. This is the finest 1864 gold dollar certified by either of the major services (2/01), and obviously there are none finer.
