    1866 Gold Dollar, MS67 Prooflike
    Deeply Mirrored, Strong Die Clashing

1866 G$1 MS67 ★ Prooflike NGC. Production rose to 7,130 pieces after dipping to almost half that amount during the Civil War. Several high-grade Prooflike examples are known, and Garrett-Guth comment that, "The 1866 gold dollar was often struck with fully mirrored prooflike surfaces and can be easily confused with Proofs." This example shows the depth of mirroring they refer to; however, the fields are heavily die clashed which would preclude any confusion with proofs. The strike details are strong overall, and the light reddish-gold surfaces display thick mint frost over the devices. Census: 1 in 67 ★ , one piece finer (8/13).
