Description
1867 Gold Dollar, MS66
Tied for Third Finest Certified
From the Harry Bass Collection
1867 G$1 MS66 PCGS. CAC. Ex: HW Bass Jr Coll. This highly
lustrous light yellow-gold Premium Gem exhibits mildly reflective
or prooflike fields with frosty and fully brilliant devices that
combine to present exceptional contrast. A few wispy splashes of
copper toning appear on each side. Most or all of the minor surface
blemishes are likely from the original planchet, and are as
struck.Variety and Die State: Breen-6081. Normal Dies. Heavy clash marks are mostly confined to the upper obverse and lower reverse fields.
Population (6/15): The finest at PCGS are four in MS66 and one MS67 finer. NGC reports one each in MS66, MS66 ★ , MS67, MS67 ★ , and MS68 ★ .
Commentary: Although a dozen Gem or finer 1867 gold dollars have appeared in the marketplace during the last 10 years, the true population of such coins is likely smaller, representing several reappearances of a smaller number of coins. Likewise, the certified population of 15 MS65 or finer examples certainly represents a smaller number of physical coins. High-grade survivors from the 5,200-coin circulation strike mintage are extremely rare. There are likely less than 10 different coins that grade MS65 or finer, and as Doug Winter notes, the Duckor coin is tied for the third finest piece.
Douglas Winter Commentary: As one would expect from its lower mintage, the 1867 is a much scarcer coin than the 1866. It is considerably more difficult to locate in Gem condition, and there are probably not more than 10 known in MS65 or higher. The finest is an MS67 PCGS that sold as lot 2502 in the March 2004 Bowers and Merena sale, while the second best is likely the MS68 ★ NGC that brought $16,100 as lot 2026 in the March 2010 Heritage sale. The Duckor coin is tied with two or three others as the third finest business strike of the date and is clearly the finest available to collectors.
Provenance: Davenport Collection (Superior, 2/1977), lot 72; Harry W. Bass, Jr. (Bowers and Merena, 11/2000), lot 72; purchased from David Akers.
