Description
1868 Gold Dollar, MS68
Tied for the Finest Certified
The Sole Finest CAC Submission
1868 G$1 MS68 PCGS. CAC. This lovely Superb Gem 1868 gold
dollar displays satiny luster with faint field reflectivity on
brilliant light yellow-gold surfaces tinged by faint green accents.
Both sides are boldly defined, save for slight weakness only
outside the upper-left wreath branch. A lint mark at the top right
side of the A in STATES nearly reaches the second T of that
word.Variety and Die State: Breen-6082. Normal Dies. Both dies are perfect with no signs of anomalies. Beginning in 1860, the size of the date on gold dollars was extremely small, although the dates were enlarged gradually through 1867. The 1868 production featured a noticeably larger logotype.
Population (6/15): This MS68 coin is tied with one other for the finest at PCGS, but this is the sole finest example in this grade with the CAC green approval. NGC has graded a single MS68.
Commentary: The Philadelphia Mint coined 10,500 circulation strike gold dollars in 1868, the highest mintage of any year from 1863 to 1872. The production total was the seventh highest from 1863 to the end of the series in 1889.
Douglas Winter Commentary: The 1868 gold dollar is common in MS64 to MS65, but Superb Gems are much rarer than generally realized. Steve formerly owned a lovely MS67 PCGS-CAC example, obtained from Dave Akers, but he had me bid on this coin for him. I purchased it for $24,265 out of the Stack's Bowers January 2012 auction. Interestingly, another MS68 PCGS example, although without CAC approval, realized $21,150 as lot 4433 in the 2013 Stack's Bowers ANA sale.
This piece has wonderful color, and it appears to be a bit less reflective than some of the other very high-grade 1868 gold dollars I have seen. It is likely the finest known and will no doubt become an important member of a world-class gold dollar set.
Provenance: Stack's Bowers (1/2012), lot 10535; purchased from Doug Winter.
