Description

Superb Gem 1870 Gold Dollar

1870 G$1 MS67 PCGS. After the mass issue of 1862, the gold dollar experienced a decade-long period of irrelevance in which only one issue saw a mintage of (barely over) 10,000 pieces. In the case of the 1870 issue, just 6,300 business strikes were produced and 35 proofs. This is an uncommonly well-preserved example with light peach and apricot accents across a bold yellow base. While the obverse swirls with luster, the reflective reverse offers a semiprooflike appearance instead. Strong die polish lines and a few planchet voids are noted on the latter side but do not influence the technical grade. Population: 8 in 67 (1 in 67+), 1 finer (3/13).(Registry values: N4719)
