Description

1870 Gold Dollar, MS67
One of the Finer Known Examples

1870 G$1 MS67 PCGS. During the seven years following the Civil War, gold dollars were a low priority item at the Philadelphia Mint, where mintage numbers ranged from 7,100 pieces to a mere 3,500 coins. In 1870, the gold dollar mintage in Philadelphia was 6,300 examples, a meager number with perhaps a better rate of survival than some of the other low-mintage issues from this era. The current Superb Gem is one of the better representatives of this date that we have examined in recent years, as it presents an impressive and visually pleasing appearance, free of mentionable flaws. The motifs are sharply rendered and the lightly toned surfaces are highlighted by soft, shimmering mint frost. One of the finer examples known at either of the major services. Population: 8 in 67 (1 in 67+), 1 finer (9/14).(Registry values: N4719)
