1870-S Gold Dollar, Mint State Details
Low-Mintage West Coast Issue

1870-S G$1 -- Altered Surfaces -- PCGS Genuine. Unc Details. The 1870-S has a meager mintage of 3,000 pieces. It is the lowest mintage of any San Francisco gold dollar issue. The mintmarked mintage may be just 1,000 pieces, since A Guide Book of Gold Dollars states that "it is likely that 2,000 [pieces] lacked the S mintmark." Unlike certain Philadelphia gold dollar dates, the 1870-S was not set aside by collectors, and unworn examples are rare. This is a sharply struck caramel-gold example with slightly glossy prooflike surfaces and a field scuff on the reverse near 4:30.
