Extremely Rare 1873, Closed 3, Gold Dollar
1873 Closed 3 MS 66 PCGS. One of the scarcest coins in the series and certainly one of the most underpublicized. Of the 1,800 business strikes minted, perhaps 75-85 examples survive in all grades. Unlike some Open and Closed varieties from this year, there is no mistaking the variety on this one. In fact, without close examination one would think this to be an 1878--the very reason the Open 3 coins were produced. The 7, in the date, is weakly struck as usual. It may be a long time before we offer another example of this variety in such superb condition.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25DA, PCGS# 7574, GSID# 8036)
