Description

1875 Gold Dollar, MS64
Important and Elusive Issue

1875 G$1 MS64 NGC. Different reverse dies were employed to produce proofs, and circulation strikes such as this example. While the differences are slight, the position of the date will distinguish between the two formats. Mint records show the coinage of 20 proofs and 400 circulation strikes coins.

NGC has certified 30 submissions in numerical grades ranging from XF45 to MS66, with 11 other "Details" submissions. They have also examined 10 proof submissions. PCGS records 69 circulation strikes grading from AU53 to MS66+ and 13 proofs that are between PR63 and PR66. This data explains the availability (or lack thereof) of 1875 gold dollars in either format.

This lovely Choice Mint State example features a bold strike with virtually full obverse and reverse details. The lustrous wheat-gold surfaces display splashes of honey-gold patina. The top 10 examples at NGC (12/25) grade MS66 DPL, MS66, MS65 PL, MS64 PL (3), MS64 (offered here), MS63+ PL, and MS63 PL (2).(Registry values: N4719)
