Rare 1875 Gold Dollar AU Polished, One of 400 Struck
1875 AU 50 Polished. The 1875 is one of the best known scarcities in the gold dollar series, its notoriety derived from the original mintage of 420 pieces, 20 struck as proofs. Like all 1875 business strikes, a tiny "spine" projects downward into the field from Liberty's throat. Normally the fields are prooflike, an aspect which has only been intensified to a bright watery sheen in this case by the polishing. A few evenly spaced disturbances on the obverse rim point to possible use in jewelry. The only blemish of note is a short scratch behind the headdress. An elusive gold dollar in any state of preservation.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25DD, PCGS# 7576, GSID# 8038)
