Description

1875 G$1 AU 50 Fields Tooled, Cleaned. One of the most acclaimed rarities in the gold dollar series, its notoriety derived from a paltry mintage of 420 pieces, 20 struck as proofs. Like all 1875 business strikes, although less obvious on this piece due to the surface alteration, a tiny "spine" projects downward into the field from Liberty's throat. Sometime in the past, this piece was used in jewelry, perhaps even holed, and the evidence of such numismatic abuse has been smoothed over by a semi-skilled artisan.
From the Eugene Peterson Collection.
