    1876 Gold Dollar, MS67
    Tied for Finest Known

1876 G$1 MS67 PCGS. The 1876 gold dollar boasts a small mintage of 3,200 coins, but unlike many later dates, this issue was not widely hoarded in Mint State. Such coins are collectible in MS64 and lower grades, but become rare at the Gem grade level. This Superb Gem example is among the finest known, and is finer than any other piece we have ever handled, even finer than the Duckor PCGS MS66+ coin which realized a record-setting $30,550 in lot 4277 of our ANA Signature sale (Heritage, 8/2015).

This is one of only two Superb Gems in a PCGS holder, the other piece being the coin plated on the CoinFacts website. NGC has also seen two pieces in MS67 (one MS67 Prooflike), with none finer (9/15). It is possible these figures include a crossover, although this is not confirmed. This piece is deeply reflective in the fields, with warm honey-gold luster and almost perfectly preserved surfaces. Slight softness of strike appears on the wreath bow and the hair curls above Liberty's eye, areas also lacking on the Duckor coin. A faint fleck near the second A in AMERICA serves as a pedigree identifier.(Registry values: N1)
