Description

1877 G$1 MS62 Deep Prooflike NGC. One of three Deep Prooflike examples certified by NGC, this coin is struck from dies matching the 1877 JD-2 proofs, described in John Dannreuther's recent United States Proof Coins, Volume IV: Gold (Part One). Because those dies were used for circulation strikes as well as proofs, the NGC Deep Prooflike designation must be respected. Dannreuther notes: "Sometimes, we must use nuances learned from years of experience to separate striking formats." Light field chatter and wispy abrasions in the mirrored fields account for the numeric grade, while the frosted devices are sharply struck on both sides. Rich-gold color gleams from the well-contrasted surfaces. Census: 1 in 62 Deep Prooflike, 2 finer (10/19).
