Outstanding 1879 Gold Dollar, MS66

1879 G$1 MS66 PCGS. The demand for a dollar coin in 1879 was more than satisfied by the huge mintage of Morgan silver dollars, resulting in the low coinage of gold dollars (3,000 business strikes). Yet they were saved in large quantities, accounting for the relatively high number surviving through the Gem level. Premium Gems are quite scarce, however, and finer specimens are extremely rare. Variegated apricot-gold and mint-green patina accented with tints of lilac jumps out at the observer of this stunning MS66 example. Dazzling luster exuding from mark-free surfaces further heightens the coin's eye appeal. Most of the letters in LIBERTY show; this is significant, as they are often entirely absent on surviving specimens. This piece, encapsulated in a green label holder, will draw serious attention from aficionados of gold coinage. Population: 37 in 66, 2 finer (9/09).(Registry values: N2998)
