    Description

    1880 Gold Dollar, MS67
    Sharp and Partially Prooflike

1880 G$1 MS67 PCGS. With a mintage of just 1,600 pieces, the 1880 gold dollar seems like it should be a rarity, but nearly 1,200 pieces survive to this day. The issue was well-saved by speculators and collectors. This example is struck from the JD-2 dies, which were also used for proofs, and indeed this Superb Gem is at least partially prooflike on the obverse, and nearly fully prooflike on the reverse. The bottom-right ribbon end resembles a toothy moray eel, a tip-off that this is a circulation strike and not a proof. Extremely well-struck with full LIBERTY and overall crisp definition, the coin shows no distractions on the attractive, rich-gold surfaces with vibrant red-gold accents. Eye appeal is terrific. Housed in an old green label holder.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 25DJ, PCGS# 7581)
