Description

1880 Gold Dollar, MS68
Low-Mintage Issue

1880 G$1 MS68 NGC. Satiny orange-gold luster covers immaculate surfaces with a few trivial deep orange toning spots. The strike is bold and the eye appeal is as wonderful as could be hoped. Only 1,636 gold dollars were minted in 1880, a total that includes 36 proofs. Apparently the majority of those minted were sold to collectors or were distributed as Christmas presents, as there is contemporary documentation that mentions the latter. NGC Census: 37 in 68 (4 in 68?), 1 finer (3/26).
