Description
1880 Gold Dollar, MS69
An Impeccable Coin With Vivid Mint Luster
1880 G$1 MS69 PCGS. CAC. In 1854 the U.S. Mint asked James
Longacre to adapt the three dollar gold design to fit dimensions of
the gold dollar. The result was an inexact copy of the Indian
Princess head -- narrower than the original design and in higher
relief. The design proved unworkable in coining presses and poor
strikes often obscured design details.By 1856 a new, broader design in lower relief was introduced with better success. Even so, gold dollars were not especially well received by the public. Silver dollars dwarfed the tiny gold dollars both in size and popularity. The short supply of gold in the later years of the series kept mintages low: Witness this 1880 date with only 1,636 pieces struck. As a result, PCGS has graded only three pieces MS69 for the entire Type Two and Three gold dollar series and just this one for the 1880 date. It is a scintillating coin. Intense luster rolls across the surfaces accented by exquisite mango-colored highlights and impossibly smooth fields. The strike is complete, as expected for the lofty grade. Certainly a worthy candidate for finest known of the date (NGC also has graded one MS69 example). A coin meant for the most advanced collector of gold dollars or the type.
