Description

1881 Gold Dollar, MS68
Incredible Type Three Representative

1881 G$1 MS68 PCGS. CAC. The 1881 gold dollar is among the most plentiful Type Three issues in Superb Gem condition, despite a small mintage of 7,620 coins. There was little commercial need for this denomination during the last quarter of the 19th century, and contemporary dealers were able to put away numerous Uncirculated coins for future generations. Nonetheless, surviving 1881 gold dollars worthy of the incredible MS68 grade are seldom seen, and anything finer is prohibitively rare. This semiprooflike, orange-gold example is among two dozen so-graded coins boasting a CAC green label. The strike is bold, and the surfaces are seemingly immaculate. An undeniable eye-catching type coin with few peers. Population: 43 in 68 (4 in 68+), 1 finer (1/16).(Registry values: N4719)
