Description

1881 Gold Dollar, Exemplary MS68
Only One Coin Finer at PCGS

1881 G$1 MS68 PCGS. Although the 1889 trumps it several times over in terms of absolute availability, the 1881 gold dollar holds out as the most readily obtainable date in MS68 -- what is for most collectors the ultimate type coin grade. The unusually high survival rate --especially for an issue with a small 7,620-coin mintage -- was secured at the time of issue when dealers and speculators hoarded Mint State examples of the low-mintage, late-series gold dollars. The limited commercial use of the denomination during this period contributed to its discontinuance after 1889.

This representative showcases immaculate, frosty luster with orange, mint, and lilac-gold hues intermingled over each side. The strike is bold, and the eye appeal is arguably unsurpassed. Population: 43 in 68 (4 in 68+), 1 finer (10/15).(Registry values: N4719)
