Description

MS68 1882 Gold Dollar
Gleaming Yellow-Gold Surfaces

1882 G$1 MS68 NGC. CAC. By 1882, the gold dollar was a novelty of the money system, rather than the essential add-on it had been at the time of the California Gold Rush. The year's token mintage of 5,000 coins that were nominally for circulation went largely to gift-giving instead. As a result, well-preserved coins are the rule, though examples so well-preserved as this MS68 piece are the exception. Pale yellow-gold surfaces swirl with gleaming luster, and sharply struck devices are impressively preserved. A slight deepening of the color toward apricot is noted at parts of the margins. Census: 12 in 68, 0 finer (8/11).
