Description

1882 Gold Dollar, MS68
Tied for Finest at PCGS

1882 G$1 MS68 PCGS. CAC. This intense orange-gold Superb Gem offers brilliant, satin luster and bold design motifs throughout both sides. Coppery toning splashes heighten the aesthetic appeal of this beauty, while light greenish overtones appear in the peripheral areas.

Variety and Die State: Breen-6104. Normal Dies. There are no clash marks or other imperfections on this early die state piece.

Population (6/15): The finest of the issue at PCGS are 11 submissions in MS68, and at NGC, 13 in MS68 and two MS68 . Among the two dozen in MS68, only 10 have the green CAC approval.

Commentary: The numismatic hobby continued its strength in 1882; the Mint coined 5,000 gold dollars to satisfy collector demand along with the needs of the jewelry industry. Like all gold dollars from 1879 to 1889, these coins did not circulate; the typical survivor is Choice or Gem Mint State. However, Superb Gem examples are elusive, as Doug Winter notes in his commentary.

Douglas Winter Commentary: This date is much rarer in high grades than the 1880 and 1881. MS68 examples are legitimately rare, as evidenced by the current PCGS population of 11 with none finer.

The Duckor coin is high-end for the grade with amazing, vivid coloration. I can't recall having seen more than one or two others that were comparable.

The last MS68 PCGS 1882 to sell at auction brought $11,213 as lot 1431 in the September 2009 Heritage sale, and it wasn't approved by CAC. A smart type collector should be able to purchase this clearly scarcer date for just a small premium over a common date such as the 1881.

Provenance: Purchased from Donald Kutz.
