Description

1883 Gold Dollar, MS68
Among the Finest at PCGS
One of Four With CAC Approval

1883 G$1 MS68 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Duckor. Light straw-gold surfaces host pale rose and blue toning on each side, with excellent design definition from a bold strike. This amazing Superb Gem exhibits virtually flawless surfaces with extraordinary eye appeal.

Variety and Die State: Breen-6105. Normal Dies. Exceptional die quality is evident on this well-made gold dollar that shows a microscopic die crack from the border toward Liberty's throat, just missing the left serif of the U. This crack starts from the left edge of a dentil.

Population (6/15): This MS68 coin is tied for finest with 11 others at PCGS. NGC reports 10 MS68 examples and one MS69. Only four in MS68 have the CAC green approval.

Commentary: This was the year of the Liberty nickel, and the famous Racketeer nickels that were gold-plated in an attempt to pass as half eagles. Speculation continued in gold dollars as the smallest available gold coin at the time. The mintage climbed to 10,800 circulation strike coins, the fourth largest gold dollar production from 1875 to 1889. Less than 1,500 of those coins survive today, although nearly all of them are Mint State, typically from MS60 to MS65.

Douglas Winter Commentary: The 1883 is another date in the Type Three series that apparently never saw circulation; many were saved by hoarders and dealers. Today, it is easily located in MS65 and MS66, and no less than 118 (!) have so far been graded by PCGS. In MS68, the 1883 is a condition rarity with a dozen graded by PCGS and none finer.

The Duckor example, graded MS68 PCGS and approved by CAC, has unusual but totally natural purple coloration which, I would assume, is the result of storage.

Five MS68 PCGS 1883 gold dollars have sold at auction since 2010, but none of them are CAC-approved. Interestingly, of all the 1883 gold dollars graded MS68 by PCGS and NGC (22 total), only four have been approved by CAC.
