Description
1884 Gold Dollar, MS68+
Possibly the Finest Known
1884 G$1 MS68+ PCGS. CAC. A crescent of rich copper-rose
toning resides inside the obverse border through AMERICA. This
lovely Superb Gem 1884 gold dollar displays reflective fields and
brilliant satin luster with essentially perfect surfaces, deserving
an MS69 grade in our opinion.Variety and Die State: Breen-6107. Repunched Date. The obverse shows a faint die crack that is nearly identical to the 1883 in this offering, and nearly led us to the conclusion that the same obverse die was used in both years. However, the crack on this 1884 gold dollar starts at the center of a dentil.
Population (6/15): This is the lone MS68+ at PCGS, seconded by six in MS68. NGC has seen four MS68 examples, one MS68 ★ , and one MS69. This is one of only two in MS68 at CAC, which ignores Plus and Star designations.
Commentary: Morgan dollar production continued to occupy the largest presses at the Philadelphia Mint, and double eagles, normally produced on those same presses, were issued only in proof format during 1884. Meanwhile, 5,230 circulation strikes and 1,006 proofs were coined of the gold dollars. It is believed that jewelers used most of the proofs in their wares. Only a small number of proofs were sold to collectors. Contemporary sources within the Mint stated that there were no 1884 gold dollars coined for circulation.
Douglas Winter Commentary: This is the single finest 1884 gold dollar I have ever seen, and it was once graded MS69 by NGC. I bought it from dealer Jason Carter in 2014 with the intention of selling it to a type collector but mentioned it to Steve Duckor, who quickly bought it from me after I raved about its quality.
The 1884 is one of the tougher "late date" gold dollars, seldom seen above MS66. PCGS shows a current population of six in MS68 plus the current example, the only one accorded a Plus designation.
Provenance: Purchased from Doug Winter.
