Description
1886 Gold Dollar, MS67
Unheralded Late-Date Key
1886 G$1 MS67 PCGS Secure. CAC. Hints of powder-blue toning
appear on the rose-gold surfaces of this stunning Superb Gem gold
dollar. A glass is required to distinguish the trivial, minuscule
surface marks from the clash marks on each side. Like most other
coins in the present offering, this 1886 gold dollar is boldly
defined.Variety and Die State: Breen-6109. Normal Dies. Light clash marks appear in the usual locations on both sides of this piece. Light to moderate clash marks appear on the vast majority of 1886 gold dollars.
Population (6/15): The finest at PCGS are five examples in MS67 and one MS67+. NGC reports 15 in MS67 and five in MS67 Prooflike.
Commentary: Collectors, dealers, and speculators likely acquired the majority of the 5,000 circulation strike gold dollars produced in 1886, while others entered the jewelry trade. The majority of survivors today are likely those that collectors and dealers acquired; typical examples fall in the range of MS60 to MS65. Finer examples are elusive. The Heritage Permanent Auction Archives shows past appearances of 18 circulation coins, 172 examples in MS60 to MS65, and 46 grading MS66 or MS67. That top grade appears at auction less than once a year.
Douglas Winter Commentary: I have always regarded the 1879-1889 "late date" gold dollars as a very collectable subset, and the 1886 is likely the unheralded "key" to the series. It can be located in MS65 and with some patience in MS66, but it is quite scarce in MS67 and likely unknown above that grade.
Only one MS67 PCGS-CAC coin has been sold at auction since 2006, and it went very reasonably for $5,875 as lot 306 in the December 2014 Legend auction. I know of just three MS67 PCGS coins with CAC approval: the Duckor example, the piece from the 2014 Legend sale, and one I sold to a collector in 2013.
Provenance: Purchased from Donald Kutz.
