Edward III (1327-1377) gold Noble ND (1363-1369) MS62 NGC, Tower mint, Cross Potent mm, Treaty Period, S-1503, N-1232, Schneider-Unl. 7.70gm. (annulet) ЄD | WARD': DЄI: GRA: RЄX: ΛnGL': DnS: hyB' x Z (retrograde) x AQ | T (double saltire stops), Edward crowned, standing facing in ship, sword in right hand, shield in left / + IhC: ΛVTЄm: TRAnSIЄnS: PЄR: mЄDIV: ILLORVm: IBAT (double saltire stops), large floriate cross with Є at center, crowned lions in angles, all within polylobe with trefoils in spandrels. Produced during the Treaty of Brétigny wherein Edward III dropped his claim to the French throne and thus omitted his French title from his coins. A markedly challenging issue on the cusp of Choice Mint State, the majority of surviving specimens often coming cracked, cleaned, or bent. Struck on a full flan with only light scattered contact, this particular piece retains a great clarity to the designs achieved through noticeably little doubling or weakness within the designs in general and legends in particular.
