Description

George III gold "Earl St. Vincent's Reward" Medal 1800 UNC Details (Mount Removed) NGC, BHM-489, Eimer-919. By C. Kuechler. 47mm. 61.33gm. A highly appealing award Medal in gold, struck primarily in bronze and silver for the officers and sailors who remained loyal to Admiral Sir John Jervis through the tumultuous late 18th century. Well-rendered with devices perfectly embossed upon the gold planchet, the piece on offer stuns when viewed in-hand. While having been removed from a previous mount, it's clear a previous owner thought quite highly of this piece, likely being suspended as a pendant and sure to remain a trophy among British historical Medal collectors.

Sir John Jervis, a distinguished British naval officer, was granted the title of Earl of St. Vincent in 1797 following his remarkable victory at the Battle of Cape St. Vincent. This decisive naval battle, fought against the Spanish fleet during the French Revolutionary Wars, showcased Jervis's strategic brilliance and leadership. His ability to command the British fleet to a significant win earned him widespread acclaim and solidified his reputation. The title "Earl of St. Vincent" was bestowed upon him as a tribute to this major triumph, marking a pivotal moment in his career and British naval history.
